Des Moines, Iowa – A season of blood, sweat, and tears has come to an end for a group of Oskaloosa High School wrestlers, with three finding a place on the podium at the state wrestling tournament held at Wells Fargo Arena.

Those finishing on the podium were; Kyler Salazar 7th, Jason Beebe 6th, and Callan Tomlin with a 5th place finish to end his high school wrestling career.

For Tomlin, this year was something special, as he remembered his friend Tyler Zickefoose, whom Tomlin describes as his best friend.

Most people in Oskaloosa know about Zickefoose and the accident that not only changed his life, but those around him. #Tylerstrong can still be found around the community, showing their support not only for the former wrestler, but his family as well.

Tomlin knocked off two higher ranked wrestlers as he worked his way to that championship. It ultimately wasn’t meant to be, as Tomlin fell to the top ranked wrestler in the state, ending up with a 5th place finish.

His first day included wrestling against the 2nd highest ranked wrestler in the state, and Tomlin was sure his opponent was looking past him. “I might as well go in there and wrestle my best and do what I can.”

Tomlin’s first loss came at the hands of the eventual state title winner, with his second loss coming at the hands of his first round opponent.

Tomlin took the dreams he and Tyler had of winning a state championship in wrestling with him to Wells Fargo Area this week. “We always wanted that state title. He always wanted it. So after he passed away this summer, I wanted to do it for him,” says Tomlin. “I tried my best. I tried to make him happy.”
