Oskaloosa, Iowa – One Oskaloosa family faced a scary situation over the weekend when, according to homeowners, someone broke into their home by cutting the screen door and prying open the back door with a crowbar of some sort. They were alerted to the intruder by their family dog.

According to a Facebook post by homeowner Becky Watters, “My dog alerted an took guard at the top of the stairs…I quietly and quickly grabbed my gun and went down the stairs. When I got to the landing there was a individual standing at the bottom of my staircase. I had my gun drawn an they yelled “oh f**k” and quickly left back out the back door.”

Watter said this all happened after sales people were in her area the day before. “They stopped by my house but I declined. They were asking what I saw as personal questions an I did not respond with anything other than saying that that was private an I didn’t know them.”

In Watter’s Facebook post, she adds, “Just be sure that you lock your doors…use the dead bolt even if you’re not going to bed yet, keep your home defense close and easily accessible, don’t provide any leading information and keep your lights outside on.”

Oskaloosa News talked with Oskaloosa Police Chief Jake McGee about the incident. McGee said the incident was reported on Saturday, around 11:30 in the evening, in the 500 block of North C.

McGee said that Watters said that when she looked down from the top of her stairs, a 6 foot black male was at the bottom of the steps. “She did show a handgun to this individual. At that time, he fled.”

McGee said that it appears that entry was forceful.

According to reports, earlier in the day, a white male and black male approached the homeowner and presented themselves as Kirby salesmen. “They did have business cards.”

The homeowner says the burglar and the salesmen do appear to look alike, McGee said.

There are no peddlers licenses on record at the Oskaloosa Police Department for any sales people, and none had been reported to the department or 911 center that day.

McGee reminds residents that there is an ordinance for anyone who solicits, peddles as a transient merchant, they need to have a license that is obtained through the police department.

No one was harmed during the burglary, and the Oskaloosa Police Department is following up on information but no arrests have yet been made.
