William Penn University will be hosting the Dean’s Convocation on Thursday, January 28, at 11:15 a.m. The convocation is held to welcome students back to campus, and to kick off spring semester with encouragement and inspiration. This year’s guest speaker will be Peter Clay, a prominent Quaker and Earth Activist.

Peter Clay completed his undergraduate degree in biology in 1972 at Quaker-founded Earlham College. While there, he became a Quaker and has been a member of the Society of Friends ever since. After working at Gerald Durrell’s Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust in the U.K., he began a long career working with primates at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. In 1985, Peter spent several months studying mountain gorillas in Rwanda. This experience guided much of his professional journey.

Peter returned to Rwanda both during and after the Rwandan Civil War to again support conservation of mountain gorillas. In 1997, Peter traveled to the Republic of Congo, where he completed a case study of a World Bank conservation-development program for his Master’s Degree in International and Intercultural Management from the School for International Training in Vermont.

Peter is now preparing to co-manage a forest in northern Wisconsin with his brother, Scott, that they helped their father, John Clay, to plant nearly sixty years ago. Peter continues to support climate action, along with biodiversity and great ape conservation in Africa while seeking writing and speaking opportunities to encourage stewardship of the Earth.

Peter Clay will no doubt bring some encouraging messages to the William Penn Campus and share his wisdom. All are invited to join the Statesmen community in welcoming Peter Clay as this year’s guest speaker at the Dean’s Convocation on Thursday, January 28, at 11:15 a.m.
