Oskaloosa, Iowa – If you see those flashing lights in your review mirror and a grizzly looking Oskaloosa Police Officer walks up to your car, versus the normally clean-shaven officers, know that the extra beard growth is for a good reason.

‘No-Shave November’ is a fairly common saying many of us hear. But what really was the idea behind the no-shave month?

The goal originally started out that ‘No-Shave November’ would be used as a way to grow awareness for cancer patients. The idea is that by men embracing the hair they normally shave off and that cancer patients lose, the money saved by not buying shaving products during that time could be donated to better educate about cancer and how it impacts the lives of those around us.

The Oskaloosa Police Department had planned to do a ‘No-Shave November’, but when cancer struck the family of one of their counterparts in the fire department, it became obvious where those funds raised needed to go.

Earlier this month, the Oskaloosa Fire Department members shaved their heads to raise money for Alexis Christenson. Alexis is the adult daughter of Oskaloosa Fire Captain Dave Christenson.

The benefit for Alexis is this Saturday at the Oskaloosa VFW, 1215 S 17th St, Oskaloosa, Iowa, beginning at 10am with the start of the silent auction. The hog roast starts at 11:30, with entertainment throughout the day.

If you would like to donate to the Oskaloosa PD’s ‘No-Shave November’ fundraiser, you can drop those donations off at the Law Center with checks payable to Oskaloosa Police Association until the end of the month. Those donations will then be presented to Alexis.
