Kaune Wins Another Qualifying as Statesmen Third at Sandhills
Lincoln, Neb.–Jacques Kaune (Anchorage, Alaska, Business Management) duplicated his season-opening efforts with another title as the William Penn men’s bowling team placed high at the Hammer Sandhills Collegiate Classic hosted by Midland University Saturday and Sunday.
William Penn finished third out of 13 teams with 8,771 pins in six regular games and four sets of Baker competition. Midland (Neb.) took the qualifying title and top seed for bracket play with 8,992 pins.
The Statesmen held one of the highest seeds, but could not hold off rival Grand View, falling to the sixth-seeded Vikings 2-0 in the quarterfinals. Kansas upset top-seeded Midland in the semifinals and won the bracket title over #2 Wichita State (Kan.) in the championship.
Jacques Kaune (Anchorage, Alaska, Business Management) won his second-straight qualifying crown, leading the field with a 212.5 average, including tying the program’s single-game record at 297. Half of his six games were over 200.
Michael Applegate (Sr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Secondary Education) competed in all six games as well, owning a 189.0 clip.
Nick Walker (Fr., Zeeland, Mich., Business Management) was next with a 179.5 mark in four games, while the quartet of Travis Scott (Sr., West Saint Paul, Minn., Physical Education) (200.7), Quincy Bruce (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) (178.0), Stian Hoff (Jr., Orkanger, Norway, General Accounting) (166.3), and Lucas Perdieu (Jr., DeWitt, Iowa, Public Accounting) (159.0) each started three games.
Ryan Howard (Jr., King, N.C., Information Technology) rounded out the varsity with an average of 173.5 in two games.
Cory Rissman (Sr., Yorkville, Ill., Industrial Technology) guided William Penn’s JV team, posting a 182.5 average in six games.
Connor Frederick (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, History/Government) (194.8) and Jason Forsyth (Fr., Weatherford, Texas) (172.2) both started five games, while Ryan Racimo (Jr. Olympia, Wash.) (187.5) and Curtis Majka (So., Elgin, Ill.) (169.5) rolled in four rounds.
Cody Adair (Jr., Kearns, Utah, Undecided) (185.7, three games), Rylie Reidel (So., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management) (149.0, two games), and Kevin Wesely (Sr., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Industrial Technology) (131, one game) finished off the second team’s scoring.
