Three Individuals Face Charges

Mahaska County Deputies and the Oskaloosa Police Department have filed charges against these 3 individuals after what they say was a 20 miles chase. Barton and McLaughlin face the most serious charges as authorities claim they stole property from the Oskaloosa Wal-Mart store.

Oskaloosa, Iowa — Three individuals are facing charges from Mahaska County Deputies and the Oskaloosa Police Department after authorities claim two males stole merchandise from the Oskaloosa Wal-Mart and then lead them on a 20 mile chase.

According to court documents, Jeremy Barton is being charged with: Theft in the 3rd Degree, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Eluding Police, and Excessive Speed.

Carmeron McLaughlin is charged with Theft in the 4th Degree; while 19-year-old Jaclynn Jones is being charged with Possession of Alcohol as a 18/19 year-old.

An affidavit filed by a Mahaska County Deputy states, “On September 23rd, 2015, at approximately 9:36 p.m., Officers were advised of a theft at Wal-Mart, 2203 An Avenue West, Oskaloosa, IA 52577. Dispatch advised: loss prevention at Wal-Mart advised two males and a female in a red Jeep with Iowa plate CXZ 195 left westbound. It was advised the males left with merchandise and took off in the vehicle with the female inside the vehicle waiting. Officers located the vehicle westbound on Hwy 92 at the Mahaska/Marion County border line and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle was pursued and stopped in Lovila, Iowa. Stolen property was located in the vehicle and the above defendant [Barton] was identified as one stealing at Wal-Mart by security video.”

“I activated my red/blue emergency lights and used 3 siren modes for a chase that lasted about 20 miles. During the chase the vehicle/driver reached speeds of 86 mph.”

During the chase, Marion and Monroe County deputies deployed stop sticks east of Knoxville to slow the vehicle, with the chase concluding in Lovilia, Iowa along Highway 5.

All three individuals were then transported back to Mahaska County by deputies and the Iowa State Patrol.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
