Dale W. Johnson

Delta. Dale W. Johnson, 101, of Delta, Iowa died Saturday, October 16, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born March 3, 1909, in Mahaska County, the son of Robert and Minnie Taylor Johnson. Following school he began farming until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1942, his unit was the first to go into Dachau when it was liberated by American soldiers. When he returned home he went back to farming in Wapello and Mahaska Counties. He was still caring for his cattle until 2006 and lived on the farm until 2008 when they moved into Delta. He also worked construction for several summers. On February 24, 1979, he was united in marriage to Eleanor Page in Ottumwa. He was very proud to be a member of the Honor Flight that traveled to Washington D.C. in the summer of 2009. He had a great love for all animals and enjoyed in caring for all his pets. He was a member of the American Legion, a former member of the Eagles and was Iowa State Fair King for 4 years.

He is survived by his wife: Eleanor of Delta; 3 nieces: Phyllis Toy of West Des Moines, Janice Ryan of Brighton, Iowa, Peggy (Randy) Griffin- Stogdill of Crawfordsville, Iowa; 2 nephews: Robert III (Pat) Johnson of Kirkville, Lyle (Vicki) Johnson of Wilton, Iowa; a stepson: Richard (Mary) Boots of Des Moines; a stepdaughter: Martha (Tony) Schmitt of Des Moines; 6 step grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren and a step great great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Robert Johnson II; a sister: Waneta McNabb; and a stepson: Tom Boots.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 19, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Dale Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Wymore Cemetery near Rose Hill. Visitation with the family present will be Tuesday after 10 a.m. until service time. Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion, V.F.W. and D.A.V. Memorials may be made to the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
