Mahaska County Conservation Board

Mahaska County Conservation Board

The Mahaska County Conservation Board and the Mahaska Wellness Coalition will be hosting a Geocaching Hike at Cedar Bluffs State Preserve beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 18th. This is a great chance to get outdoors and get fit while hiking, identifying wildflowers and searching for geocaches in the park. The MCCB staff will explain how to use the GPS units to find geocaches. A limited number of GPS units will be provided for groups to use along the trail. Feel free to bring your own! For more information, contact the Mahaska County Conservation Board at (641)673-9327. There is no cost for this event.

The Cedar Bluff State Preserve contains 225 acres of the most unique topography in Southern Iowa. The hiking trails take you along sandstone bluffs that overlook the Cedar Creek and Des Moines River. The sandstone canyons are lined with mosses, liverworts and ferns and the timbered ridge tops contain beautiful spring wildflowers. The overlook platform by the river and the Native American burial mound are other popular sites in the park. Cedar Bluffs is located 9 1/2 miles southwest of Beacon, IA on G62, which is the gravel road just beyond the Eveland Access turnoff. The parking lot is located on the southwest corner of the property.
