UNITED WAY 2013 PARTNER AGENCY APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE

United Way of Mahaska County

Oskaloosa, Iowa – United Way of Mahaska County is now accepting applications from qualified 501(c) 3 human services agencies for 2013 funding.

“This year we are making some positive changes to our investment process, and are looking forward to sharing the information with our potential partner agencies as well as investment volunteers,” said Brianne Fitzgerald, Executive Director. “We need to make measurable improvements to the day to day lives of the people in our county, by focusing on the three building blocks for creating a better life-education, income and health, and our investment process reflects our commitment to make these improvements. By doing this, we ensure that families become stronger, healthier and more financially stable. The United Way’s investment process is a genuine reflection of our commitment to our community, and creating a better life for everyone.”

To qualify, an agency must be established as a human service tax-exempt organization under the IRS Code Section 501(c) 3. The allocation packet requests agency information in the areas of: constitution and bylaws, management, financial reports, statement of cooperation and statement of nondiscrimination. The agency must additionally meet the funding criteria, financial accountability, community needs, program priorities and effectiveness. Those agencies wishing to be considered for 2013 allocations must return the funding application by noon on Monday January 7, 2013. New this year is a mandatory training for all interested parties completing an application on Monday December 3rd at 9am at the United Way office located at 500 High Ave W.

The United Way of Mahaska County and its partner agencies share two common goals in the allocation process relative to the overall mission: 1) To fund real community needs as fully as possible and 2) To allocate available funds for optimum effect among these needs.

“Before your gift to United Way is invested in our community, a diverse group of local volunteers serving on the Community Investment Team decide where the funds will be invested,” explains Fitzgerald. “The volunteers listen to presentations, and review the applications to learn what the programs can do for our county. We hope that past volunteers come back again to be a part of the process, and that new volunteers also join us. We are looking for 15-20 volunteers to commit to a 2-4 hour volunteer opportunity to give back to our county. The allocations process is so much more than just distributing funds. It’s an opportunity to learn more about your community, and help make a difference.”
