Softball Tournament Benefits MHP Hospice Services

Oskaloosa – Eight softball teams from across the state competed in a Softball Tournament in memory of Victoria and Sam Legvold, held at the William Penn Activity Center in Oskaloosa on Jan. 28 and 29.

According to event organizer Carey Legvold, he wanted to raise money for a great local cause and bring men’s softball back to Oskaloosa. He talked with his softball team, Down 2 Play, and they were excited to host the tournament.

“Mahaska Hospice is special to me because they were so involved and helpful with Victoria Legvold (stepmother), and Sam Legvold (grandfather) through their passing,” Legvold said. “Not only were they a big help with them, but also with our family. They are really special people and we appreciate everything they did.”

Legvold’s team ended up placing second in the tournament. First place went to Elite Sports from Iowa City. This year’s efforts raised $650 and Legvold said he plans on making the tournament an annual event.

Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Services includes Mahaska Hospice, Keokuk County Hospice and the Hospice Serenity House, located on the MHP campus in Oskaloosa. Hospice Services Director Kim Lambert said donations like Legvold’s are vital to patient care. “This donation will go to our community funds, which are used to help cover the costs of services provided for uninsured and underinsured patients of MHP Hospice Services.”
