One Nation Under God

In last week’s column we looked at how God has revealed Himself to us. Through His creation and His Word, the Bible, God has told us about His qualities. The first quality we will look at is God’s eternal nature. “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God” (Psalm 90:2). God’s eternal nature demands that He transcends all elements of time. God does not live in the past or in the future. He lives in the now. God is always!

The second quality we see revealed to us about God’s qualities is that He is all-powerful. God’s power is shown by His speaking the earth into existence. God said, “Let there be light; and there was light” (Genesis 1:3). God’s might, His genius, His ability to set all things in perfect harmony is seen throughout our universe. Our flights into space are possible because we depend on the accuracy of God to direct the stars in the heavens.

The third and final quality we will examine about God in this week’s column is that God is good. Our English words “God” and “good” are related. “Every good and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with Whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James 1:17). So often in the culture we live in we compare things that we consider “good” with something relative to “goodness.” God in His very nature is good. He is the essence is good. He is the objective measurement to which we determine the goodness of everything that exists.
