Roger Hogate

Roger Lee Hogate, 53, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, October 23, 2011, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born Monday, August 4, 1958, the son of Martin and Darlene Voss Hogate in Oskaloosa. He graduated from Newton High School with the class of 1976. He then attended Simpson College and received his Bachelor’s Degree in business in 1980. Following school he worked in marketing for JCPenny’s in Grand Forks and Fargo, North Dakota for 12 years. In the early 90’s he moved back to Oskaloosa and worked at Rent-A-Center and later at Instant Cash Advance for several years until illness forced his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, coaching his men’s league and girl’s little league softball teams. Roger had a great love for football and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Green Bay Packers fan. Not only could he tell you every player on the Packers team but also a history of the player as well.

He is survived by his mother: Darlene Hogate of Oskaloosa; his father: Martin (& Diana) Hogate of Warsaw, Missouri; two sisters: Betty (& Bob) Sullivan of Sparta, Wisconsin and Linda (& Phil) Swenson of Fort Collins, Colorado; a brother: Chuck Hogate of LaPorte, Colorado and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 27, 2011, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Rick Smith and Mike Sereg officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Wednesday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Iowa Hospice.
