Oskaloosa City Band Set To Perform Final Concert Of The Season

The Oskaloosa City Band during one of the weekly performances held June until August every Thursday at 8:00 p.m.

The Oskaloosa City Band will perform its final concert of the summer on Thursday night at 8 p.m. in the bandstand on the city square. It has been a great season and the band has enjoyed playing each week.

This week’s marches include “National Emblem” by E.E. Bagley and “Americans We” by Henry Fillmore. Other tunes that will keep listeners’ toes tapping include “The Syncopated Clock” and “Spinning Song”. The trombone section will be featured in a perennial favorite, “Lassus Trombones”.

Andrew Glover’s new arrangement of “Entrance of the Gladiators” will remind listeners of going to the circus as a young child. Other childhood memories may be renewed as the band plays a medley of theme songs from two popular television programs from the 1970’s, “The Waltons / Little House on the Prairie” by Eric Songer. Rounding out the 70’s decade, the band will play “Dancing Queen”, made famous by ABBA, and more recently featured in the musical “Mama Mia”.

In 1986 an animated film was made about a mouse and his adventure across the ocean to America. The band will play “Somewhere Out There”, the theme song from “An American Tail”. The song was originally recorded by Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram, and later won two Grammy Awards. And finally, the band will close the concert with John Phillip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever”, which was also featured in the film.

Lastly, a music folder was lost in July. If anyone knows its’ whereabouts, please return it to an active band member or to City Hall. The band members wish to thank everyone who includes the Thursday night concerts in their summer schedule. Please return to the square next summer as the tradition continues.

On a person note. I would like to thank everyone involved with this project. We have enjoyed the performances and it’s great to see the huge support they have from the community.
