Juanita Binns
Oskaloosa – Juanita Elizabeth Binns, 88, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, August 4, 2011, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. She was born November 8, 1922, in Des Moines, the daughter of Charles and Violet Sandeen Sloan. Juanita graduated from the Oskaloosa Senior High School with the class of 1941. On July 28, 1943, she was united in marriage to Raymond E. Binns at Oskaloosa, and Raymond died November 9, 2002. Following their marriage Juanita stayed home to care for her children and home. Family was the center of her life: she took care of her aging mother, and delighted in being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Juanita enjoyed knitting, and was very proud of the over 300 Christmas stockings she made. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, King’s Daughters, Pythian Sisters, and Daughters of the Nile. She enjoyed golfing and spending Saturday evenings with the Saturday night supper and card group. She also enjoyed playing bridge and collecting lighthouses. Juanita always looked forward to the annual family trip to Huddles at Leach Lake in Minnesota.
Her family includes her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Jay Fox of Oskaloosa, five grandchildren: Jeff (Shari) Fox, Jodi (Scott) VanSickle, Jill (Mike) Dursky, and Sarah and Shannon Binns; 7 great grandchildren: David Fox, Haley and Megan Dursky, Ethan, Hannah and Kara VanSickle, and Brayden Binns; two brothers and their wives: Keith and June Sloan of Pella and Marvin and Jane Sloan of Knoxville; and a sister in law: Mila Sloan of Fairfield; and a very close friend Ruth Hilliard in Minnesota.
In addition to her husband, Juanita was preceded in death by her parents; a son: Phillip Binns; two brothers: Charles Sloan, Jr. and Wain Sloan; and a sister in law: Florence Sloan.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Thomas Boomershine officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Monday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6—8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church or Mahaska Hospice.
