Summer Heat Continues To Punish
Oskaloosa, Iowa – This proverbial shot of the bank clock once again shows the extremes of every day life, and I did not want disappoint and took this shot of the clock located at Valley Bank here in Oskaloosa around 3:00 pm. this afternoon.
The National Weather Service has been alerting the public for what seems the better part of the past month of the extreme heat wave that seems to have settled over the middle of the United States. Cars and air conditioning systems have suffered greatly during the past month. But beyond the heat related illnesses, come dangers while driving: pavement buckling, causing cars or motorcycles to avoid the danger, and in some cases causing damage to vehicles or more.
So what can a person do during the heat like this? The National Weather Service states:Drink plenty of fluids and to stay in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun. They also remind everyone to check up on relatives and neighbors during high heat times.
If you work or spend time outside, when possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening, wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible, and drink plenty of water. To reduce risks during outdoor work, OSHA recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. They also remind you that heat stroke is an emergency and you should call for immediate medical attention.
They also remind you to take precautions to protect pets and livestock.
There is relief in the forecast. A weak cold front will move into the region today, bringing some relief, eventually dropping temps into the mid-80’s.
