Woofstock 2010 waggs it’s way to a great time

Woofstock 2010 Radar Run

Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter held it’s annual Woofstock this Sunday starting at 11:00 am with food. They served BBQ, chips and a pop for $3.00. Hawkeye Kiddie Tractor Pull was set up and doing tractor pulls starting at 1 pm, with the sign up for that beginning at 12:30. The winners walked away with some awesome trophies.

Oskaloosa Police Lt. Gary McClun helped out with the “radar run” (See Photo). The dog would start at one end and run towards their owner at the other end of a fenced off corridor. During the sprint to the owner, Lt. McClun would radar them, clocking their speed. Many a passing participant was clocked by radar as well. The dogs were faster.

There were many games for the young, and the young at heart. We had some firefighters and other officials doing the bouncy horse races, with only a few bruised ego’s to go with it. But it was all in great fun, and the crowd loved cheering on the participants. Both the fire department and police department also displayed equipment, and helped to educate the public.

The “corn crib hunt” kept kids busy hunting for prizes in a large basin of corn kernels looking for those elusive prize chips. The petting zoo gave the kids and dogs some new experiences and for the doggies, new smells!

There were vendors of all types, an auction and other displays from Share Iowa of Oskaloosa, and Crisis Intervention of Oskaloosa.

Great Plains Pointer Rescue of Nebraska and Iowa was on hand with some of their great pointers. Heartland Weim Rescue was there with their display. They serve the states of Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. Please check them out on their Facebook page as well as their website.

There was a demonstration of tracking ability. Iowa K-9 Search Team starring Gunnar and Joker showed off their abilities in man trailing. They also have the ability of cadaver recovery as well.

Iowa Voters for Companion Animals gave a presentation on how to help stop puppy mills. Iowa ranks 3rd in the nation with the most puppy mills. Missouri is 1st in the nation, but working on curbing that problem with new legislation in Proposition B. That legislation will be voted on in November by the residents of Missouri. If you see or suspect a puppy mill, you can contact your local law enforcement agency.

I want to give a personal thank you to all the hard workers and volunteers from Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter for everything they do. They give these unwanted dogs and cats the love and attention they deserve. Without them, we wouldn’t have our wonderful family friend “Boogie”. I would highly suggest stopping out to the shelter and looking for a new friend to take home with you, or just finding out how you can be of help to them.
