Henrietta “Hennie” was born February 22, 1912 near Wright, Iowa, to Herman and Elizabeth Van Rees Veerman. She attended Elm Grove School where she graduated from eighth grade. As a young woman, Hennie was a caretaker for Dr. Clark’s children for several years. And as the oldest daughter of ten children, she helped her parents with her younger siblings and the many duties involved with a large family. Hennie married Neal Newenhouse, February 22, 1933, in Oskaloosa where they raised their two daughters. She enjoyed golfing, fishing, flower gardening, maintaining her yard, baking pies and spending time with her family. Hennie and Neal were married for 74 years and she lived in the same house on South Eight Street for 68 years until in 2007 when she moved to Maple Ridge Assisted Living. Hennie was a lifelong member of Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa.

Hennie’s family includes her daughters; Louise Crookham of Paradise Valley, AZ and Janice Rickard of Pella; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Helen Carriker and Artie Van Roekel, both of Oskaloosa; a sister-in-law, Martha Veerman of Oskaloosa; and a special friend, Ruth Hilliard, also of Oskaloosa.

Besides her parents, Hennie was preceded in death by her husband, Neal on July 15, 2007; two sisters: Nellie Talbert and Dorothy McCombs; and five brothers: Herman, Roy, Ernie, John and Bill Veerman.
