Planning and Zoning Gives Approval To The New Skate Park Site Plan

The site plan for the new skate park was approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission

Two issues were before the Oskaloosa Planning and Zoning Commission on April 11th, 2011.

The Commission also welcomed their newest member, Charlie Comfort, to his first regular meeting.

The first item on the agenda, beyond the approval of the minutes for the March 14th meeting, was that the board considered the vacation and sale of 133′ x 16.5′ of the north-south public alley that is adjacent to 323 North J Street. The measure passed.

The next item on the agenda was approval of the site plan for a 41,090 square foot Urban Park that will be located at the South Corner of A Avenue West and North B Street. The site plan was submitted by the Mahaska County Recreation Foundation and has been known as the “skate park”.

The current zoning of the property is Community Commercial/Planned Unit Development District.

Some concern was raised by board member Del Brackney over the height of the fencing around the basketball court area, and if six foot would be high enough to contain stray basketballs from entering traffic. He believes that a height of ten foot would better protect the public from the stray basketball that might enter A Avenue from over the fence.

That issue had been raised in the planning portion of the project, and nets that attach to the back of the baskets would be put in place in order to catch most stray basketballs.

Also pointed out was where the new entrance to the mall would be. The current entrance from A Ave. West would be moved to the East side of Hardees.

The final vote to approve the site plan was 5-0, and the project moves on to the next phase.
