Obituary:
Boyd LeRoy Refshaw was born July 21, 1940 in Clearbrook, Minnesota the son of Elmer and Gyda (Evje) Refshaw.
He was raised on his family’s farm in Clearbrook and as a young man he went to work on his uncle Ray’s farm. Boyd later worked on oar boats and then for the lumberyard in McIntosh. He married Edie Rouland in 1960. They had two children, Terri and Michael. He then moved to Minneapolis where he worked 20 years for Adolfson & Peterson Construction, and served as a job superintendent. In 1983, he moved to Iowa and went to work for Graham Construction of Des Moines as a General Superintendent. He retired in December of 1999 after 15 years of service with Graham. On March 29, 1985 Boyd was united in marriage to Vicki Maeschen and the couple have always made Pleasantville their home. Throughout his career, Boyd had worked on many large projects in Iowa including Mercy and Methodist hospitals and the Plaza. With his vast knowledge, Boyd brought many construction innovations to Iowa. Most notably, he taught his crews how to pour concrete and continue construction through the winter months.
In his spare time, Boyd enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, camping and yard work. He looked forward to his 30 year tradition of ice fishing in Canada with friends and family. He also loved fishing in Canada with friends in the summer. Hunting grouse with his Brittney dogs was another of Boyd’s favorite activities. He was also a talented woodworker and made many pieces of furniture through the years. Boyd also liked just sitting at home and picking on his guitar. His greatest joy in life was his family; he loved spending time with his wife, children and especially his grandchildren.
Boyd passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2010 at the Mercy Medical Center, in Des Moines, at the age of 70 years, 8 months and 20 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Ralph, Dean and Dale and his grandson, Nicholas.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Vicki; daughter, Terri Refshaw (Chris Skinner) of Ramsey, MN; son, Mike (Shelly) of Rush City, MN; 6 grandchildren: Benjamin, Meredee, William, Jacquelyn, Charlotte and Amelia; great-granddaughter, Millie; brother, Larry (Eileen) of Mahnomen, MN; sister, Shirley Hoffman of Lake City, FL; step daughters, Jennifer (Jason) Latch of Pleasantville and Amanda Jones of Clearwater, FL; step-mother Edith Refshaw (Clearbrook, MN); step-sister Patsy (Pete) Lewis (Leonard, MN) and many other family members and friends.
