Greg was born on March 31, 1963, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin to Charles and Billie Shope Sumner. The family lived in Lee’s Summit, Missouri and Grinnell. He attended Grinnell schools and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1981. He lived in Grinnell and was employed by the Donaldson Company. He was also a musician and performed with the Black Water Band and the Sumner Brothers Band.

He enjoyed working in his garden and spending time on his computer, but music was his life. He enjoyed composing music and was currently involved with producing an album of music.

He is survived by his companion, Angie Smith of Grinnell; his daughter, Tyanna Young of Oregon; one granddaughter, Marisa Young; and two brothers, Gordon Sumner and Joe Sumner, both of Grinnell;

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Chuck Sumner.
