Shawn Shaffer age 39, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2011, as a result of an automobile accident near Eddyville, Iowa. He was born February 17, 1972, in Mahaska County, Iowa, the son of Earl Shaffer and Jema Jewell. He was united in marriage to Jodi Junkins. They later divorced. He then married Deora Babcock on May 7, 2005, at Grace Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Shawn graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1993. Following graduation from high school, he served in the United States Navy for nine years. He served on the U. S. S. Eisenhower for six years in the Persian Gulf. He later worked as a recruiter in Ottumwa, Iowa. Following discharge from the Navy, he attended Indian Hills Community College for two years and then worked as an independent welding contractor. He currently was employed by Relco Locomotive as a supervisor. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Shawn enjoyed playing golf, frisbee golf, pool, card games, and fishing. He particularly enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Deora; sons: Gage Shaffer, Gavin Shaffer, Griffin Shaffer, Garrett Shaffer, Andrew Shaffer, and Alex Shaffer; his mother: Jema Degarmo of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and his father and stepmother: Earl and Diana Shaffer of Oskaloosa, Iowa; two grandmothers: Lucille Shaffer and Berta Venter; sisters and brothers: Lori (Jason) Glasgow of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Mike Shaffer of Denver, Colorado; Amie Johnston Lindsay of Columbus, Ohio; Chasity (David) Johnston Lewellen of Dallas, Texas; many aunts and uncles, including an aunt with whom he was very close: Tena (Tim) Carpenter of Tulsa, Oklahoma; many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Shawn was preceded in death by grandparents: Velma and Lloyd Rice, Earl Shaffer, Sr., and Sarge Venter, Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Shawn Shaffer Memorial Fund in care of Bank Iowa in Fremont, Iowa.
