Statesmen Cap Regular Season with Top-10 Finish, Trip to Match Play at Hoosier Classic

Indianapolis, Ind.–The William Penn women’s bowling team will head into postseason competition with momentum as it fared well at the Hoosier Classic Saturday and Sunday.

WPU placed seventh out of 64 teams with 7,648 pins in five regular games and 15 Baker games. Pikeville led qualifying action with 7,994 pins.

As the No. 7 seed in the eight-team match play event, the navy and gold met up with Heart of America Athletic Conference foe and No. 2 seed Mount Mercy in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, William Penn was ousted 2-1, while MMU eventually claimed the bracket title.

Brooke Binder of Aquinas was the best individual in Saturday’s regular play with 1,124 pins (224.8 average).

Alyssa Tanner (Fr., Traverse City, Mich., Sports Management) was within reach of Binder, ending up 15th overall with 1,060 pins for a 212.0 average. The freshman posted four games in the 200s with a high of 244.

Lucy Mitchell (Jr., Poulsbo, Wash., Psychology and Human Services), with a 201.4 clip, and Kelcey Aczon-Kawamura (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., Nursing), at 200.4, also averaged above 200 while starting all five rounds.

Brianna Thompson (Jr., Campbellsport, Wis., Psychology and Sociology) knocked down 180.3 pins in her round starts, while Ashley Gorman (So., Stillwater, Minn., Exercise Science) also competed four times with a 170.3 mark.

Hannalee Songer (So., Ottumwa, Iowa, Business Management) (210) and Danielle Fincham (Jr., Surprise, Ariz., Exercise Science) (137) each started once for the navy and gold.

“The ladies bowled great all weekend,” Head Coach Kirstin Foster said. “Everyone contributed at some point. Spare shooting was on point and everyone was communicating. It is only the second time in program history that we have made match play at the Hoosier, so we are very happy with our performance.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Columbia, Mo. Saturday and Sunday to compete at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship.
