WPU Puts Wrap on Regular Season with Top-Half Finish at Hoosier Classic

Indianapolis, Ind.–The Statesmen men’s bowling team finished off its regular season by competing at the Hoosier Classic Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn placed 27th out of 78 teams with 7,619 pins in five regular games and 15 Baker rounds. Wichita State paced qualifying with 8,510 pins, but was upset in the quarterfinals of match play by No. 8 seed and eventual champion Webber International.

Brandon Bohn of Webber International headlined individual action with 1,204 pins for a 240.8 average.

Aidan Piet (Jr., Meridian, Idaho, Business Management) was his squad’s top roller, averaging 212.6 pins, while Ethan Zieglowsky (Sr., Washington, Iowa, Biology) also finished above the 200-pin mark at 208.2.

Mathew Smith (Jr., Mountain Home, Idaho, Sports Management) started all five rounds as well with a 193.6 clip.

Aidan Majer (So., Yorkville, Ill., General Accounting), at 196.0, and Ethan Licht (So., Victor, Iowa, Sports Management), at 168.7, both competed in three games, while Gavin Unger (Fr., Columbus, Neb., Engineering Technology) (201.5) and Carter Boley (Sr., Grimes, Iowa, Exercise Science) (169.5) started two games each.

“We started with a nice set Saturday, but then struggled a bit with shot execution and ball motion,” Assistant Coach Scott Alderson said. “Fortunately, we dug deep and had two solid sets to finish the day. Sunday was the toughest conditions we have bowled on all year by far. The scoring pace was very low, but the guys bowled great and moved up in the standings. There were so many positives from the weekend; we just need to polish up a couple things this week to be ready to compete for the conference championship.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Columbia, Mo. Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship.
