Statesmen Reach Bracket Play at ISYL Leatherneck Classic
Rockford, Ill.–The William Penn women’s bowling team earned its first match play experience last Saturday and Sunday as it battled at the ISYL Leatherneck Classic.The Statesmen finished sixth out of 28 teams in qualifying with 7,277 pins in five regular games and 16 Baker games. Judson (Ill.) led the standings with 7,688 pins.
In bracket play, WPU was paired with Heart of America Athletic Conference foe and No. 3 seed Mount Mercy. Unfortunately, the Statesmen were eliminated 3-1 (182-201, 176-180, 189-164, 167-204), while the Mustangs went on to win the match play title.
Paige Carpenter of Judson (Ill.) headlined the individual standings with a 217.0 average (1,085 pins).
Ashley Gorman (So., Stillwater, Minn., Exercise Science) also eclipsed 1,000 total pins, pacing the navy and gold in eighth place with 1,019 (203.8 average).
Kelcey Aczon-Kawamura (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., Nursing) also landed in the top 25 with a 187.0 average in five starts.
Lucy Mitchell (Jr., Poulsbo, Wash., Psychology and Human Services) was next with a 168.3 mark in four rounds, while Jayden Montgomery (Fr., Sigourney, Iowa, Secondary Education) had a 183.7 average in three starts.
The rest of the varsity lineup all started two games apiece. That listed included Brianna Thompson (Jr., Campbellsport, Wis., Psychology and Sociology) (158.0 average), Danielle Fincham (Jr., Surprise, Ariz., Exercise Science) (153.5), Alyssa Tanner (Fr., Traverse City, Mich., Sports Management) (152.5), and Macyn Huston (So., Durant, Iowa, Elementary Education) (150.5).
William Penn’s reserve squad finished fifth out of 13 teams with 6,576 pins, while Alaina Degenstein (Fr., Tacoma, Wash., Nursing) averaged 184.0 pins.
“The ladies bowled great this weekend,” Head Coach Kirstin Foster said. “They hovered around the top 10 all day Saturday, so they knew they had work to do Sunday. They went in with a slightly different mindset, and it showed in their shot execution and team chemistry. We have a relatively young team, and making match play in our second tournament is impressive. I am proud of what they accomplished.”
