Oskaloosa, Iowa – You always find her with a smile and kind words. During a recent ceremony at the Iowa Capitol Building, Paula Falconer was recently honored by Volunteer Iowa.

Those nominated and awarded have their names engraved on the Volunteer Hall of Fame plaque on permanent display in the State Historical Museum. Since 1989, there are now over 175 names on that plaque.

Paula was recognized for her volunteer work with AmeriCorps, where she helped make the Eddyville Summer Lunch Program which ultimately provided over 8,300 meals during the height of the pandemic.

Paula also led a group of family and friends to sew nearly 1,000 bags made from t-shirts for the Ottumwa Food Bank so that they could distribute fresh produce to recipients during the pandemic.

According to the Volunteer Iowa website, Paula was nominated by Erika Abusharkh, saying, “Paula has committed herself to find a way to bridge gaps that exist in her community, as well as gaps that exist between people.”

Oskaloosa News enjoyed sitting down with Paula and talking to her about being recognized for her volunteer work.

Paula said the trip to Des Moines was wonderful as a family and was even more special because her mother was also here from Jamaica.

“We got to be important even for just a little time,” said Paula, who Iowa Lt. Governor Adam Gregg recognized.

“I volunteer because it’s important to give back to the community that has taken care of you,” explained Paula on why she volunteers. “I volunteer so that my children realize that this is what you’re supposed to do because this is how you give back. This is how you show your gratitude, and I volunteer because it’s good for the soul.”

When asked if she would encourage others to volunteer, Paula says, “Yes, I would. I don’t think a lot of people realize that it’s volunteers that make our community thrive.”

“My message is get out and volunteer,” Paula said as we wrapped up our conversation.
