#8 Story of the 2011-2012 Year
The 8th-most notable story from 2011-2012 involved a ‘changing-of-the-guard’ for several sports teams.
The reins to the men’s and women’s soccer programs were both handed over to new skippers, while the women’s basketball team saw a promotion within the ranks.
Greg Jarosik became the new men’s soccer coach, while Willie McGowan was named the new women’s soccer coach. Both hirings came just after the Thanksgiving break.
Jarosik led both the men’s and women’s squads at Doane College in Nebraska and guided the men to their first-ever votes in the national ranking.
McGowan, formerly of Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, was a regional coach of the year and won over 66% of his games there.
The biggest managing change came on the hardwood, though, as Brian Spielbauer stepped down as head women’s basketball coach to accept the position of Athletic Director at Presentation College in South Dakota. Mike Brown received the keys, moving up from assistant coach the past two years.
In nine years on the sideline, Spielbauer eclipsed 100 wins and returned the navy and gold to the league’s upper echelon. William Penn’s 23 wins in 2010-2011 were the most in almost three decades.
