7th Grade Indians dominate the Albia Blue Demons to finish undefeated at 6-0.
The Oskaloosa Indians knocked off another good opponent in Albia at the Blue Demon field on Tuesday night. Albia had not lost on the year, beating four 2A teams, as well as winning against 3A Chariton, and tying 3A Centerville. The Indians did not take them lightly and came out and played their physical brand of football winning the A game 33-14. After leading the game 33-0 for three quarters, the Indians were able to sit the starters the rest of the game. The reserves battled hard, but gave up two Albia scores with the second score being the last play of the game. Oskaloosa had the ball first and charged out to an 8-0 lead after Vincent Ramirez ran in from 55 yards out. Tucker Nunnikhoven added the two point conversion. The Oskaloosa defense took the field and didn’t allow Albia to do much of anything. In fact, on a couple drives the Albia offense seemed to be in reverse as the Indian defense made several tackles for loss. Oskaloosa led 20-0 at halftime as Ramirez and Nunnikhoven each added another score. The second half was more of the same as Oskaloosa scored twice more again on runs by Ramirez and Nunnikhoven and the defense hardly surrendered a yard. Jacob Kime added the extra point kick after one of the scores for the final tally for the Oskaloosa offense. Alex DeJong and Izaya Strait did a great job blocking from the receiver position to free the Indian backs for some long runs. The interior blocking for the Indians was executed better than any game all year. Those blocking up the middle were Cole Jansen, Geoff Fogle, Nick Reiter, Nick Kutz, Richard Phillips, Tanner DeKock, and Blake Van Veldhuizen. The Indian defense was led by some jarring hits from Ramirez, Van Veldhuizen, and Tanner DeKock. Other defensive leaders were Alex Chapman, Alex DeJong, Will Kiminek, Richard Phillips, Jacob Kime, Jaden Van Roekel, Keaton DeKock, and Nunnikhoven as he added an interception. In the shortened B game Oskaloosa was defeated by Albia 6-0. Zuhayer Mamun led the offense with several nice runs. The defense was led by nice tackling from Levi Fresquez and Dakota Gillam, strong line play from Paul Ginaven and an interception by Lucas Johannes. Although the B team struggled to get in the win column this year their effort and enthusiasm were always positive. They were instrumental in the success of the Indian team as they pushed the A team players in practice every week to get better. The coaches would like to thank all the Oskaloosa fans for the strong support all year. This is an excellent group of kids with great leadership and determination who will only get better going forward. There is a strong commitment from the kids as all 43 kids who started the season also finished it. The Indians will be working hard in the offseason as well as participating in other sports as they strive to keep their undefeated record alive next year.
