Oskaloosa, Iowa – On Saturday, June 1st, the Mahaska Drug parking lot was abuzz with excitement as the community gathered for the 6th Annual Bark-A-Que. The event, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., drew families, pet lovers, and local celebrities for a day of fun, food, and fundraising.

The Bark-A-Que was organized to support the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter. Jane Nicholson, owner of Mahaska Drug and the person behind the idea for the event, shared insights into the origins and purpose of the event. “We started this as a fundraiser for the animal shelter. They have such a big need for taking care of the animals. So, we tried to come up with something we could do that was community-oriented,” said Nichols. The event has grown significantly over the years, becoming a staple in the community’s calendar.

The event featured a variety of attractions for attendees of all ages. For just $5, participants could try their luck at dunking local celebrities in the dunk tank, an activity that drew much laughter and excitement. Pet owners had the opportunity to get professional photos of their pets taken by Wag On Pet Photography for $10. Children enjoyed the inflatables provided by Lazer Alley and balloon animals crafted by Tom Terrific.

Food was a major highlight of the event, with pulled pork meals smoked by Rob Harvey available for $10 and hot dog meals starting at $5. “We have cheddar dogs, and we have pulled pork sandwiches,” Nichols noted. The presence of SnoBiz, offering shaved ice and ice cream, was a sweet treat for many, especially with coupons available for free treats for the kids.

The Bark-A-Que also provided a platform for community engagement with local law enforcement and emergency services. Attendees had the chance to meet Lieutenant Plumb and Rocky, Officer Rogers, and Duke, as well as Sparky the fire pup, and the Oskaloosa fire truck and the equipment used by firefighters. Additionally, there was a unique opportunity to meet a llama courtesy of Merle Mann and a mini donkey and her baby provided by Brad Cubit.

The free-will donations collected during the event went directly to supporting the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter. Nichols expressed her passion for the cause, stating, “I just like animals. I have a soft spot in my heart for the animals that are looking for a home.” The event’s success was a testament to the community’s generosity and involvement. “We’ve had lots of community groups that come help us—the fire department, the police department, the Sheriff’s Department, a lot of volunteers. It’s just a fun event for people,” Nichols added.
