#6 Story of the 2011-2012 Year

Coming it at #6 on the 2011-2012 list was a breakout year by one of the least-recognized sports teams–the women’s golf program.
Two years removed from not even sponsoring a squad due to lack of interest and one year beyond finishing seventh in the Midwest Collegiate Conference, the Lady Statesmen linksters turned a lot of heads this year.
William Penn was dynamite from the first tee shot of the season, breaking team records for 18 and 36 holes in its first tournament in Minnesota. Those scores did not stand long, as week after week, a lower posting was established.
When it was all said and done, the navy and gold won three tournament titles (three individual medalists as well), were ranked for the first time in school history (#25 on March 30), and broke every record in the book.
Freshman Maggie Yang was named a first-team all-MCC player, while junior Courtney Kronmuller picked up an honorable mention.
Head Coach Nik Rule said this after a fourth-place finish in the MCC Championships, “We have proven we have the talent to win every time we take the course…In one season, we have gone from one of the least competitive teams in the conference to a team that has been recognized in national polls, a team that has won several golf tournaments, and placed in several others. We were able do to this so quickly because we have such a great group of student-athletes who really take pride in what they do.”
