Mary Viretta Wisse was born on April 25, 1915, in Monroe, Iowa. She went to her heavenly home on Thursday morning, August 23, 2012 at the age of 97.

Viretta received her education in the Pella Schools and later attended Central College. On August 18, 1942, she was united in marriage with James Wisse.

She was a teacher and substitute teacher for many years. She was the librarian at the Pella Public Library during the depression. She also worked at Vera’s Beauty Salon and volunteered at the VA Hospital.

Viretta was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Pella. She was also a member of the Christian Women’s Temperance Union and served on the Marion County Election Board. She enjoyed gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, sewing, politics, and staying up to date on current events by faithfully reading the newspaper. She loved sitting on her front porch. She often visited her parents’ graves at the cemetery.

Viretta was loved by many. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James, in 2004.
