2016 Beane Lecture Series at WPU Welcomes Lon Fendall
William Penn University will welcome Lon Fendall on Tuesday, March 15 as the 2016 Beane Lecture Series guest speaker. Fendall will be giving two lectures, both of which will be open to the public. His first lecture will be held at 11:15 am. in the Chief Mahaska Room in the Dana Atkins Memorial Union. It is titled, “Partnerships with Africa that Help Instead of Hurt.” His second lecture, titled “Personal Spiritual Discernment — difference between knowing stuff and being spiritually sensitive & responsive” will be held at the Musco Technology Center at 6:30 pm.
Lon Fendall is the presiding clerk and Sunday School teacher at West Chehalem Friends Church in Newberg, Oregon. He did his undergraduate work at George Fox University and earned his Masters and Doctorate Degrees in History at the University of Oregon. In 1990, Lon was appointed as Dean of the Faculty at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, then as Academic Vice President of Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas. From there Lon and his wife Raelene returned to Oregon, where he once again directed the Peace Studies Program at George Fox, directed its international studies programs, and was Dean of Undergraduate Studies. During his later years at George Fox, Lon wrote and published several books.
Lon retired in 2010 and has once again been involved with programs in Africa as a volunteer consultant for ministry training among the Friends churches in Kenya, Burundi, Congo, and Rwanda.
The Beane Lecture Series was established through an endowment by Ercil and Maxine Beane in 2008 to develop programs that engage students, faculty, and the community in discussions about Quaker principles and philosophies. Through that endowment, a guest speaker is brought to William Penn University each year to share Quaker teachings and values with members of the school and surrounding community. William Penn University is pleased to welcome Lon Fendall for the 2016 edition of the Beane Lecture Series.
