William Penn Statesmen overpowered their opponents at home finishing the season 6-0 at home and outscoring their opponents 256-40 on their home turf.
With the 2011-2012 school year complete and summer well upon us, the William Penn Sports Information office found it to be appropriate to recall some of the greatest moments from another successful campaign. Over the next several days, the top ten stories from last year will be revisited.
At #10, we rewind to August for a brief look back at the opening of the new Lacey Complex Stadium.
On August 27, 2011, William Penn athletics began a new era with the long-awaited opening of what is now referred to as the Lacey Complex Stadium.
William Penn and the Oskaloosa Community School District had played football in Oskaloosa Community Stadium for decades, but both made the move to the northwest corner of town this past fall.
Dirt surroundings (grass would be seeded later in the fall) and portable bathrooms did not deter the navy and gold faithful from packing the stands and witnessing William Penn drill rival Iowa Wesleyan 42-7.
Head Coach Todd Hafner said this after the game, “This was a great atmosphere tonight and I am so happy for everyone that we were able to come away with a win in our first game in this new, beautiful stadium.”
Sophomore quarterback Taylor Parsons scored the first touchdown in the new stadium, a two-yard run just 5:53 into the night. He finished with 99 yards, while sophomore fullback Shawn Davis did him one better with 100 yards.
The Statesmen finished the 2011 campaign at 9-2 (5-2 Midwest League). They were a perfect 6-0 at home, outscoring visiting teams 256-40.
