WPU Returns to Action at Brissman-Lundeen Invite

Rock Island–The Statesmen cross country teams got back to work Friday as they competed in the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational hosted by Augustana.

NCAA Division I University of Chicago dominated the men’s 8K event with the lowest possible score of 15 points as it had the first five runners, including winner Ryan Cutter at 24:59.2.

Chicago finished the sweep with 36 points on the women’s side. Maggie Boudreau of Chicago was the top collegiate female finisher in the 6K race at 22:18.6.

The Statesmen men ended up 19th out of 23 teams in the standings with 559 points. Vernon Trozzi (Fr., Hesperia, Calif., Exercise Science) had an exceptional day, placing 35th overall at 26:23.8. He was only 26 seconds outside of the top 20.

William De Jesus (Fr., Homestead, Fla., Biology) was next for the navy and gold, taking 185th at 28:55.8, while Axel Vazquez (Fr., Wray, Colo., Sports Management) crossed the line in a time of 30:59.5 to be 252nd.

Jack Miller (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Physical Education) was right behind Vazquez, placing 256th at 31:05.1. Julian Davis (Jr., Palmer, Alaska, Mechanical Engineering) concluded the team scoring in 267th place at 31:43.9.

David Williams (Sr., Victor, Iowa, Secondary Education) (269th, 31:48.2) and Terry Jackson (Sr., Houston, Alaska, Biology) (270th, 31:51.0) headlined the rest of the Statesmen harriers.

The women, who unfortunately were not able to post a team score, were led by Michaela Kmiec (Fr., Centerville, Texas, Exercise Science). The freshman was just outside the top 100, placing 112th at 25:27.6.

Talaysia Douver (So., Lakewood, Calif., Sociology) was next, taking 150th at 26:33.6, while Ashlee Johnson (Fr., Marshalltown, Iowa, Sociology) was six spots behind her in 156th place at 26:37.6. Madison Udy (So., American Falls, Idaho, Exercise Science) wrapped it up for WPU as she was 204th at 28:45.9.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Fayette, Mo. next Saturday to compete in the Central Methodist Gary Stone Invitational. It is the site for next month’s Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships.
