Chicago, Ill.–The Statesmen men’s soccer team received its first blemish of the season Saturday, falling 2-1 in overtime to Robert Morris.

The box score told a different story than the scoring summary. William Penn (1-1) outshot the Eagles (1-1) 9-5 in the first half, but gave up an early penalty kick goal to trail 1-0 at intermission. The Statesmen then came up short 10-4 in second-period attempts, yet managed to record the equalizer.

Just minutes after Luis Amezquita (Jr., Inglewood, Calif., Sociology) was sent off with a red card to put his team down a man, Matt Devereux (So., Andover, England, Business Management) finished off a pass from Eduardo Bonatto (So., Rio Grande, Brazil, Business Management) inside the box at the 62:58 mark to knot the score at 1-1.

Neither side could post the game-winner in regulation, so extra play ensued. Unfortunately, RMU closed out the matchup 6:28 into the overtime session.

Overall, Robert Morris outshot WPU 16-13. Kenedy Deviska (Fr., Haiti, Wellness and Recreation) topped the offense with three shots and Amezquita added two more.

Miguel Barbosa (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sport Management) tallied four saves in the setback.

“This is a disappointing result for our guys,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “I thought we were the better team and created more than enough chances to win. We lacked composure in the attacking third, though, and some silly defensive errors cost us. We have a long way to go this season, but I trust this group to work hard and respond in the correct way.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Kansas City, Mo. next Saturday to face Avila in non-conference action at 4:30 p.m.
