WPU Ends Year at Conference Invite

Atchison, Kan.–The Statesmen cross country team concluded the 2018 season by competing at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships Saturday.

The women (268 points) and men (323 points) both placed 11th out of 12 teams. MidAmerica Nazarene topped the women’s standings with 48 points, while Benedictine was the best men’s squad with 76 points, holding off Baker by five points.

Melanie Cozzi of Benedictine finished first (out of 108 runners) in the 5K race in a time of 19:31.40. Missouri Valley’s Ulysses Orozco placed first (out of 123 runners) in the 8K competition in a time of 26:34.42.

Talaysia Douver (Fr., Lakewood, Calif.) guided the Statesmen women by placing 41st at 22:20.20. Andrea Jaquez (Fr., San Antonio, Texas, Exercise Science) was next in 61st place in 23:34.25.

Madison Udy (Fr., American Falls, Idaho, Exercise Science) was third for the navy and gold, taking 70th at 24:01.69, while Bree’Anna Lee (Jr., Broken Arrow, Okla., Biology) was 72nd at 24:07.14 and Zena Cohuo (Fr., Carrollton, Texas, Exercise Science) was 73rd at 24:20.97.

Kenneth Bolton III (Fr., South Riding, Va.) was the best Statesmen male as he finished 69th at 30:41.71. David Perry (Fr., Sierra Vista, Ariz., Business Management) claimed runner-up honors for the team in 73rd place at 30:52.37. Terry Jackson (Jr., Houston, Alaska, Biology) was next, crossing the line in a time of 31:35.32 to place 82nd.

Cameron Shade (So., Riverdale, Ga., Sociology) ended up 84th at 31:42.76, while Jack Miller (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa) rounded out the varsity scoring in 94th at 32:27.25.

A quintet of other harriers also hit the course, led by Gabriel Webster (Fr., Worland, Wyo.) in 103rd at 32:56.58. Also competing was Joshua Williams (Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) (106th, 33:22.42), Julian Davis (So., Palmer, Alaska, Mechanical Engineering) (110th, 34:21.25), Jacob Fisher (Fr., Albia, Iowa) (112th, 34:40.51), and Tylor Durbin (Fr., Fremont, Iowa, Business Management) (120th, 38:38.89).
