Dubuque— The Statesmen(11-22, 5-12 Heart) hit the road to take on The Clarke Pride(10-18, 8-8 Heart) in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
Unfortunately for William Penn, they would drop both games to Clarke by the scores of 10-9 and 7-2.
WPU 9, CU 10
Game one ended in heartbreak for the Statesmen after they fought valiantly to come back from a 10-3 deficit by scoring 6 runs in the final two frames only to fall a run short.
There were a couple of bright spots offensively for the Statesmen as Hayley Freestone (JR/Las Vegas, Nev.) recorded a multi-hit game going 2-3 at the dish with an RBI and Sonia Reddy (So., Tracy, Calif., Exercise Science) launched a home-run. The long ball was Reddy’s first of the season.
Jillian Calabrese (FR/Anthem, Ariz.) highlighted the Statesmen pitching performances by going 3.2 innings while only allowing 2 runs while striking out 3 and walking none.
WPU 2, CU 7
The Statesmen outhit the Pride 11-9 but were unable to push across the runs needed to take the victory.
Reddy continued her big day at the plate in game two, going 3-5 with a home run while driving in three runs and Roxanna Jensen (Sr., Coto de Caza, Calif., Psychology) went 4-5 with a home run and three RBI’s. The Senior’s home run was her second of the campaign.
Katie Springer (Jr., Riverside, Iowa, Psychology and Human Services) started in the circle for the Statesmen and while she did not have her best stuff, was still able to strike out 7 across 5 innings but ended the game taking the loss.
Next up: William Penn will host a doubleheader against MidAmerica Nazarene on Friday, April 13th, starting at 4 p.m.
