Ankeny–In a head-to-head showdown between two of the best programs in the Midwest, the Statesmen women’s golf team bettered its out-of-state foe by defeating Bellevue in a dual Tuesday.

#17 William Penn posted a two-round score of 627 (319-308), holding off Bellevue (334-317–651) by 24 strokes at the par-71 Otter Creek Golf Course. WPU’s varsity reserve team was on the links as well and placed third at 681 (349-332).

Bellevue, which is unofficially 32nd in the NAIA, was led by Morgan Hazzard in third place at 158 (77-81).

Brittany Evans (Jr., Fernley, Nev., Business Management) topped the 15-player field with a career-best 146 (74-72), including tying her 18-hole best in the second round.

Elise Warne (Sr., Melbourne, Australia, Exercise Science) was second at 157 (80-77), while Bailee Frayne (Fr., Garner, Iowa, Elementary Education) was also in the top five in fourth at 161 (81-80).

Megan Rhoads (Sr., Schertz, Texas, Psychology), in eighth at 166 (87-79), and Alexis Guimaraes (Jr., San Ramon, Calif., Psychology), in 11th at 171 (84-87), rounded out the varsity crew.

Julia Hippely (Fr., Huron, Ohio, General Accounting) was the best varsity reserve participant, carding a 164 (81-83) to finish seventh. Deanna Peiffer (Jr., Washington, Iowa, Public Accounting) was two slots behind her in ninth at 167 (87-80).

Sofie Lund (Sr., Herning, Denmark, Industrial Technology), in 12th at 174 (90-84), Katrina Estes (So., Paw Paw, Mich., Biology), in 14th at 179 (94-85), and Madison Lantz (So., Corona, Calif., Psychology and Human Services), in 15th at 188 (91-87), also competed Tuesday.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Oklahoma City, Okla. next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic hosted by Oklahoma City. Play will be contested at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
