WPU Crushes Clarke in Road Matchup
Dubuque–Eduardo Bonatto (Sr., Rio Grande, Brazil, Business Management) and Kenedy Deviska (So., Pignon, Haiti, Wellness and Recreation) each scored a pair of goals as the Statesmen men’s soccer team defeated Clarke 5-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Wednesday.
#14 William Penn (12-3, 7-1 Heart) held a 21-4 advantage in shot attempts over the Pride (2-11, 0-8 Heart), including 13 on goal. The win keeps the navy and gold within one game of league-leading Central Methodist (8-0) in the Heart standings with three games left in the regular season.
The visitors tallied the contest’s first five shots, but were knotted in a scoreless tie through 32 minutes. Deviska finally broke that tie at the 32:44 mark, putting away a pass from Bernardo Lima (Sr., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Exercise Science).
Lima then played finisher in the 40th minute, making it 2-0 with an assist credited to Jonathan Riley (Jr., St. Neots, England, Exercise Science). Lima has six scores in 2019.
The 2-0 halftime margin grew to 3-0 at the 51:10 juncture when Bonatto, with help from Deviska, found the netting. The senior doubled his fun with an unassisted goal just 109 seconds later. He now leads the squad with 13 goals.
Deviska matched Bonatto with his second goal (unassisted), capping the day’s adventures in the 61st minute. The sophomore’s goal tally is now eight this fall.
Austin Munoz (Sr., Harrisville, Utah, Sports Management) worked the first 62 minutes between the pipes (no saves), while Miguel Barbosa (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sports Management) closed out the contest in his season debut (also zero saves). Barbosa suffered a serious injury during preseason camp that has kept him off the pitch.
“This was a steady performance from our men,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “We had some good spells in the game, but we should have scored several more goals. We want to be playing our best soccer at the end of the season and we will look to get a big win against Graceland on Saturday.”
