Baldwin City, Kan.–The Statesmen cross country teams finished out their 2017 seasons by running at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships Saturday.

The men were 12th out of 13 teams with 343 points, while #10 Missouri Valley rolled to the win with 22 points, including having five of the top eight placers. MVC’s Paulino Sanchez won the 8K race in 25:46.69.

Terry Jackson (So., Houston, Alaska, Biology), in just his second race of the fall, guided the Statesmen in 61st (out of 111 runners) with a time of 29:45.72.

Cameron Shade (So., Riverdale, Ga., Sociology) was next in 67th place at 30:10.65, while Treavon Ware (Fr., Washington, D.C., History) placed 88th in his debut with a time of 31:51.42.

Joseph Diaz (Fr., Laredo, Texas, Wellness and Recreation), in 92nd at 32:13.84, and Julian Davis (Fr., Palmer, Alaska, Mechanical Engineering), in 98th at 32:45.43, rounded out the scoring for the navy and gold.

Shane Crozier (Fr., South Holland, Ill., Sports Management) (101st, 33:43.25) and Percy Burton (Fr., Baltimore, Md., Sports Management) (106th, 36:32.40) also ran for William Penn.

The women were 14th out of 14 squads with 352 points; #20 MidAmerica Nazarene earned the Heart’s automatic berth to nationals with 29 points. The Pioneers were paced by individual winner Bethany Brown in a time of 18:48.75.

Guadalupe Gonzalez (Sr., Houston, Texas, Exercise Science) wrapped up her collegiate harrier career by finishing 40th (119 competitors) on the 5K course in a time of 21:00.29.

Michelle Reyes (Fr., Brownsville, Texas, Biology) was runner-up on the team in 76th at 22:56.24, while Heaven Buckner (Fr., St. Louis, Mo., Business Management) was 100th in 24:41.48.

Bree’Anna Lee (So., Broken Arrow, Okla., Biology) crossed the line in a time of 24:42.39 to place 101st, while Lauren Lehman (Jr., Norwalk, Iowa, Undecided) wrapped up WPU’s scoring in 111th (26:57.75). Rachel Surbaugh (So., Knoxville, Iowa, Biology) (118th, 30:57.34) also hit the course Saturday.
