WPU Beats Field, Mother Nature for Home Title
Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s golf team accomplished the season sweep at home by winning the Mike “Fluff” Cowan Intercollegiate Sunday and Monday.
Blustery conditions, especially on the opening day of competition (40-plus mile-per-hour gusts), did not prevent the Statesmen from finishing first out of seven teams with a two-day tally of 603 (305-298) at the par-72 Edmundson Golf Course. Graceland finished second at 617.
It is the program’s third win of the season and second in a row at Edmundson Golf Course.
Frederik Lundsgaard (So., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) picked up the tourney crown at 146 (73-73); it is first win of the year and fourth of his career.
Ben Roberts (Sr., Albia, Iowa, General Accounting) was next in the 40-player field, tying for third at 150 (75-75), while his three other varsity teammates were also in the top 10. Brandon Dizon (Jr., San Leandro, Calif., Sociology) shared fifth place at 153 (76-77), Spencer Skipper (Sr., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Business Management) finished eighth at 156 (82-74), and Clay Tucker (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Elementary Education) tied for ninth at 157 (81-76).
The navy and gold’s second squad also fared well, placing fourth (324-315–639). Justin Bothma (Sr., Boksburg, South Africa, Business Management) and his seventh-place finish at 154 (79-75) led the crew. Charlie Hayes (Jr., Whitesboro, Texas, History/Government) narrowly missed the top 10 in a tie for 12th at 159 (81-78). Ethan Powers (Sr., Tipton, Iowa, Physical Education) tied for 23rd at 165 (78-87), and Kyle Hashimoto (Jr., Acampo, Calif., Exercise Science), at 86-83, and Zach Swink (Jr., Burlington, Iowa, Sociology), at 90-79, both tied for 27th at 169.
Individually, Rory Schafer (So., Solwezi, Zambia, Mechanical Engineering) tied for 20th at 164 (83-81) and Bradley Hamilton (Fr., Earlham, Iowa, Physical Education) was 30th at 170 (84-86).
