Wilma Jean Douglas
Wilma Jean Douglas, 78 of Oskaloosa, died Monday, December 19, 2011 at Maple Ridge Assisted Living in Oskaloosa. She was born January 10, 1933, in Marion County, on a farm near Tracy, Iowa to Guy Jonathan and Julia M. Baker Masterson. She enjoyed farm life and especially enjoyed riding her pony Ribbon with her sister. Wilma graduated from Tracy High School and on July 23, 1950 was united in marriage to Dean Douglas of Tracy. Dean died November 8, 2007. Wilma was a devoted mother, raising four children and later working at Mahaska Book Store in Oskaloosa as a clerk. Later on, she took the bookkeeping position at Fitch’s Automotive in Oskaloosa for several years. She finished her working life as a bookkeeper for McGregor’s, retiring after 14 years.
Wilma was also active in the Tracy Chapter of the Eastern Star, Tracy Friendship Club, Bellefountaine Cemetery Association, and American Legion Auxiliary. She especially enjoyed serving meals and providing the Kiwanis Club with noon meals. She, along with Dean, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa. Her leisure time was spent reading and watching movies on TV. Wilma was either coming or going to her grand kids sporting and other events and loved it when her grand kids came to spend time at her house. The backyard softball games and Easter egg hunts at Grandma’s house with the grand kids were special to her. The kids and grand kids can also attest to the fact that she was an avid Aggravation or ‘marbles’ player, as she called it. Occasionally, when she was getting beat she pulled off a move she liked to call ‘shake a da’ board’.
Her family includes her four children, Rick (&Patti) Douglas, of Sterling, Illinois, Connie Douglas of Glasgow, Missouri, Patricia (& Dean) Hasselman of Renton, Washington, and Jacqueline (& Phil) Griffin of New Sharon, four grandchildren, Eric Douglas, Kate Douglas, Scott Griffin, and Amy Griffin as well as a sister, Lois Batchelder of Sigourney, IA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean, and her parents.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 23, 2011, at 10 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa, with Reverend Dr. Dennis Morey officiating. Burial will be in the Bellefountaine Cemetery near Tracy. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Thursday morning after 11 in the Bates Funeral Chapel. The family will be at the funeral chapel Thursday evening from 6-8 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Stephens Memorial Animal Shelter.
