William Penn Unable to Return Favor to Vikings
Oskaloosa–The second half was again not kind to the Statesmen women’s basketball team in an 84-73 Midwest Collegiate Conference loss to Grand View Wednesday.
WPU (10-14, 3-5 MCC) led 33-29, but was outscored 55-40 after intermission in being swept in the season series by the Vikings (11-14, 7-1 MCC).
The Statesmen gave up the first four points of the night, but then went on a 29-12 run to lead by a game-high 13 points with 6:27 remaining in the first stanza.
William Penn put the first two points on the board following the break, only to witness GVU answer with eight straight to take its first lead in nearly 20 minutes of action. The contest went back and forth for the next several minutes until the visitors gained the advantage for good with 10:53 to play.
The margin ballooned to nine before WPU whittled it down to four with 3:11 left. Unfortunately, the hosts could not get any closer than that deficit, being outshot 49.1%-38.4% in the setback. GVU was limited to 34.4% in the opening 20 minutes, but almost doubled that mark in the second half (68.0%).
William Penn committed two fewer turnovers (9-11), yet was outscored 11-7 in points off mistakes. The navy and gold got those points back in second chances (12-8), however, despite losing the rebounding category 43-42. Jessie Kreuser (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Physical Education) tallied only four points, but was strong on the glass with 12 rebounds.
Both sides had troubles at the line (WPU shot 50.0%, GVU was 64.5%). The visiting squad had eight more makes (20-12) though which covered much of the difference.
Alyssa Phillips (So., Gurnee, Ill., Communications) headlined the Statesmen offensive effort with 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting. Janay Pritchett (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Biology) came off the bench and provided 17 points, while Kadejah Young (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn., Physical Education) also eclipsed double digits with 11 points.
Katie Golomski (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology & Sociology), with eight points, and Vanessa Kieres (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Exercise Science), with seven, had solid showings as well. Golomski also managed three assists Wednesday.
