William Penn Third in Spring Opener
Opelika, Ala.–The Statesmen men’s golf team wrapped up its spring break trip with some real competition, doing battle at the Lawrence Tech Spring Break Invitational Thursday and Friday.
WPU placed third out of 11 teams with a two-day tally of 605 (300-305) at the par-72 Grand National Golf Course (Lakes Course). #13 William Woods won the title at 584 (293-291), while #37 Cumberlands held off WPU for second at 600.
Ben Kendrick of Cumberlands and Billy McKenzie of William Woods tied for the individual medalist honor at four-under 140.
The Statesmen, who are ranked #32 in this week’s Bushnell Golfweek NAIA poll, were led by Sebastian Rulis (Jr., Denmark, Business Management). The junior finished in a tie for sixth (out of 60 players) at 147 (73-74).
Frederik Lundsgaard (Jr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) was next, placing 11th at 149 (75-74), while Peter Frederiksen (Jr., Hornslet, Denmark, Mechanical Engineering) also ended up in the top 20 as he tied for 17th at 152 (76-76).
Zachary Chegwidden (Fr., Essex, England, Business Management), in a tie for 44th at 161 (76-85), and Brandon Dizon (Sr., San Leandro, Calif., Sociology), in a tie for 46th at 162 (81-81), also competed for the navy and gold.
Next Up: William Penn takes a couple weeks off before traveling to Salina, Kan. on March 27-28 to compete in the Kansas Wesleyan Invitational. Play will be contested at the Salina Country Club.
