Oskaloosa–The Statesmen softball team completed a streak of four consecutive days with games in a disappointing way as it was swept by Heart of America Athletic Conference foe Mount Mercy on Senior Day Sunday.
WPU (13-30, 7-20 Heart) lost by scores of 15-5 and 2-0.
The navy and gold were unable to run with the Mustangs (29-20, 18-12 Heart) in the opener, being outhit 15-9 and committing seven errors.
Sonia Reddy (So., Tracy, Calif., Exercise Science) was 2-for-4 in the setback, including hitting a three-run double in the fourth. Roxanna Jensen (Sr., Coto de Caza, Calif., Psychology) was also 2-for-4, while Rachael Trapp (Sr., Broken Arrow, Okla., Biology) scored a pair of runs as well.
William Penn lost the hits battle 9-5, but went into the seventh and final inning in a scoreless tie with Mount Mercy. Unfortunately, the visitors managed a two-out, two-run double and the Statesmen failed to answer. WPU had a runner in scoring position just once, doing so in the sixth inning.
Katie Springer (Jr., Riverside, Iowa, Undecided) scattered those nine MMU hits in a complete-game effort. The junior struck out three in the nightcap.
Next Up: William Penn travels to Canton, Mo. Tuesday to face Culver-Stockton in a Heart doubleheader at 4 p.m.
