William Penn Stopped by Clarke in Road Matchup

Dubuque–The Statesmen women’s basketball team could not extend its winning ways into a road upset against a ranked foe, falling 85-47 to #12 Clarke in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Wednesday.

WPU (2-17, 2-6 Heart), which won last weekend over Missouri Valley, failed to pull the shocker over the Pride (17-2, 8-0 Heart), who remain atop the league standings with a perfect mark.

Behind a three-pointer by Zantasia White (Jr., Lubbock, Texas, Secondary Education) and a pair of buckets from Morgan Terry (Jr., Cornersville, Tenn., Biology), the visitors trailed just 9-7 after seven minutes on the hardwood. Unfortunately, CU caught fire and closed out the first period on an 11-1 run for a 20-8 advantage.

The run continued into the second quarter as the home squad scored 20 unanswered points and were not threatened by the Statesmen again.

Outshot 50.8%-33.3%, WPU did manage to match the Pride from the perimeter as both sides were 8-for-22 in three-pointers. The visiting side was also outrebounded 42-26 and committed three more turnovers (13-10).

Terry was 6-for-11 from the field en route to 13 points. Ally Stewart (Jr., Victoria, Australia, Physical Education) also accounted for 13 points as she connected on four trifectas.

White was next on the scoring list with eight, while Alexis True (Jr., Frankfort, Ky., Exercise Science) added five. Journie Augmon (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev., Human Services) pulled down a team-best five rebounds, while she and True each assisted on three field goals.

Stewart and Joslyn Herbeck (So., Fond du Lac, Wis., Sports Management) guided the defensive effort with three steals apiece.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to host Baker in Heart action at 2 p.m.
