William Penn Garners Academic Accolade
Oskaloosa–The top Statesmen wrestlers from 2012-2013 have been strong in the classroom as well and they were recognized for their scholarly achievements as the NAIA/NWCA All-Academic Awards were released.
The National Wrestling Coaches Association recognized both team and individual honors. The team GPA was based off the GPAs of the top 12 individuals who competed in varsity action (ten were required to compete at the national-qualifying tournament).
William Penn tied for the sixth-best GPA at 3.14, while Great Falls (Mont.) topped all NAIA squads with a 3.37 GPA.
NAIA All-Americans and national qualifiers were also honored for their academic successes. To be honored, All-Americans were required to have a minimum GPA of 3.0, while national qualifiers had to reach the 3.25 mark.
Two Statesmen were recognized among a total 48 grapplers who represented the division.
197-pounder Kyle Soderblom (So., Newton, Iowa, Biology) led the All-American group (22 total) with a 3.85 GPA. Soderblom placed seventh at nationals in March.
133-pounder Joao Vicente (Fr., East Providence, R.I., Secondary Education) was on the national qualifier list as he owns a 3.57 GPA.
