William Penn Fifth in Las Vegas Tier 1 Tourney
Las Vegas, Nev.–The Lady Statesmen bowling team ventured west and proved it can compete in any time zone, again placing near the top of the heap at the Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout Sunday and Monday.
William Penn placed fifth out of 17 teams at the Tier 1 event with a tally of 10,535 pins (six regular games, 16 Bakers).
In six tournaments, the Lady Statesmen have yet to finish outside the top ten, including two top-fives.
Wichita State (Kan.) won the team crown with 11,506 pins, while the Shockers’ Jazreel Tan had the best six-game average at 236.0 (1,416 pins).
Samantha Powell (Jr., Herriman, Utah, Bingham HS) topped the navy and gold in 13th place (out of 100 bowlers) with a 198.7 average (1,192 pins). Kirstin Newberry (So., Holland, Mich., West Ottawa HS) was next in 16th with a 195.7 average, while Breanne Underwood (Sr., Treynor, Treynor HS) just missed the top 20 (23rd) with a 186.7 clip.
Abigayle Wempen (Jr., Titonka, North Iowa HS) had one of the best outings of her career, averaging 184.7 pins. The foursome rolled in all six games. Amanda Edenholm (Jr., Marysville, Wash., Marysville-Pilchuck HS) and Jessica Fuja (Fr., Roselle, Ill., Lake Park HS) split the last six games with Edenholm owning a 183.5 mark in four contests and Fuja posting a 200.0 average in two games.
