William Penn Defeated by C-SC in Final Home Game of Calendar Year
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s basketball team was cold from the field in a 71-54 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss to Culver-Stockton Saturday.
WPU (0-12, 0-3 Heart), which was outshot 50.0%-33.9%, appeared ready for a battle as it exchanged buckets with the Wildcats (7-3, 1-1 Heart) through the first seven minutes of play.
The navy and gold pulled ahead for the third time in the contest at 9-8 on a jumper by Amanee Clark (So., Waterloo, Iowa, Human Services). Unfortunately, C-SC went on a 9-0 run to go ahead for good. Clark eventually stopped the run with another score, but the visitors went into the second quarter up 19-11.
Although the Statesmen forced seven turnovers in the second quarter, Culver-Stockton was able to extend its advantage to 11 by halftime at 33-22.
It did not get any better for WPU in the third period as the squad was limited to eight points. Unfortunately, with the game in hand in the waning minutes, William Penn finally caught fire, recording a 24-point fourth quarter. The navy and gold were 44.4% from the floor and 55.6% from behind the arc in the stanza. At game’s end, the hosts were better from deep at 28.6%, while the Wildcats were just 12.5%.
The Statesmen made it to the free-throw line on just nine occasions with a 6-for-9 showing; C-SC outscored WPU by 11 in that department as it was 17-for-23 overall.
Turnovers reared their ugly head as well with William Penn committing 19 (17 for C-SC) which were converted into a 19-8 edge in second-chance points for the visitors.
Ally Stewart (Jr., Victoria, Australia, Physical Education) led William Penn with 17 points, including connecting on five three-pointers.
Journie Augmon (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev., Human Services) joined Stewart in double figures with 10 points, while Alexis True (Jr., Frankfort, Ky., Exercise Science) just finished outside the double-digit club with nine points.
Clark contributed seven points with four assists off the bench, while Joslyn Herbeck (So., Fond du Lac, Wis., Sports Management) accounted for five points in a non-starting role as well.
Emma Morts (Jr., Milford, Ill., Business Management) matched Augmon with a team-high six rebounds, while the Statesmen dropped the category 38-30. Despite topping Culver-Stockton 10-8 on the offensive glass, WPU was outscored 11-4 in second-chance points.
Next Up: William Penn travels to Fayette, Mo. next Wednesday to face Central Methodist in Heart play at 5:30 p.m.
