William Penn Clobbers Opponents on Second Day of MCC Weekend

Oskaloosa–The Lady Statesmen softball team was by far the most impressive and dominating program at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Weekend, concluding the event Sunday with two more wins by mercy rule.

William Penn (21-11, 9-1 MCC), who has won six in a row, defeated both Waldorf and Grand View 8-0 in five innings. The navy and gold are now 12-0 in contests hosted at the Lacey Complex over the past three years.

The Lady Statesmen did all of their damage in just two frames in each of their victories.

Ashley Stream (Sr., Chariton, Chariton HS) gave her team the lead for good against the Warriors with a two-run single in the first, scoring Brianne Rowley (Sr., Hood River, Ore., Blue Mountain CC) and Khyia Lewis (Sr., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS). Both runs were unearned as Waldorf should have been out of the inning much earlier, but committed two errors (four total in the game) to keep the navy and gold kicking.

Six more runs were added in the second inning, highlighted by a grand slam home run by Lewis that brought in Rowley, Molly Miller (Jr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS), and Ashlee Dennis (Fr., Loveland, Colo., Mountain View HS).

Miller also singled to plate Ashley Kingery (Jr., Knoxville, Knoxville HS), while Rowley had an RBI one-bagger that recorded Brittni Reyes (Sr., Vacaville, Calif., Solano CC).

William Penn finished with an 11-5 advantage in hits. Stream was a perfect 3-for-3, while Reyes also batted 1.000 at 2-for-2.

Jennifer Whitehead (So., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) moved to 9-6 with her third shutout of the year. She struck out five without a walk.

It was much of the same in the day’s second matchup. The Lady Statesmen were denied in the first and second, but they refused to be shut down in the third.

Rowley drove an offering over the center field fence for a two-run homer (Miller also scored). It is her eighth roundtripper of the season, tying Lewis for the team lead.

Stream then added a double that scored Lewis to make it 3-0 after the top of the third.

The senior shortstop came up with another big shot in the fourth, leaving the yard with a three-run homer. Her second home run of the year brought in Lewis and Miller as well.

Prior to the four-bagger, Miller tallied pinchrunner Brailey Freed (Jr., Loveland, Colo., Otero CC) with a single and Lewis doubled in Reyes.

Miller hit safely in all three plate appearances, while Lewis was 2-for-2 and Stream was 2-for-3.

Nicole Danna (Jr., Boone, Iowa Central CC) gladly accepted the run support, but took it a step further by turning away the Viking hitters for her third shutout of the campaign. The junior had just two strikeouts, but did not allow a walk in the five-hit performance.

Next: William Penn travels to Forest City Wednesday to meet Waldorf in an MCC doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
