Akway Wins First League Honor

Oskaloosa–Ochaung Akway (Sr., St. Paul, Minn., Physical Education) had his best showing of the year last weekend and he was rewarded by being named Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week Monday.

Akway earned his first award by leading the Statesmen at the St. Ambrose Invitational. His season-best time of 26:40 on the 8K course was good for ninth place out of 120 runners. He led all MCC competitors on Saturday.

The senior has paced WPU in two races this year. It is the first award for William Penn in 2014.

Record-Breaking Weekend Nets Yang First Honor

Oskaloosa–Maggie Yang (Sr., Chino, Calif., Biology) performed extremely well in front of the home crowd and was rewarded for those efforts by being named Midwest Collegiate Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week Monday.

Yang collected her first award of the year (seventh career) by winning the William Penn Invitational last Friday and Saturday. She shot a 74 the first day and then posted an even-par 71 the following round to break two schools records. The senior snapped her own 18-hole mark with the 71 (old mark was 72) and is now once again the owner of the 36-hole mark at 145 (old mark was 148).

Her scores paced the Statesmen to their fourth tournament title of the fall as they also set new program marks for 18 holes (304) and 36 holes (615–311-304).

The junior currently has a 78.1 stroke average over nine rounds and has placed no lower than sixth this fall. She has recorded five rounds in the 70s.

It is the fourth award for William Penn this year.

Lundsgaard Takes Second Honor

Oskaloosa–They brought out the red marker on the second day to post the score of Frederik Lundsgaard (Fr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) and his low round helped him pick up Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week laurels Monday.

Now a two-time winner, Lundsgaard won the William Penn Invitational with a school-record 139 (old mark was 141), highlighted by a three-under 67 on Saturday (72 on Friday). The new program mark assisted the Statesmen to their own new numbers as they smashed the 18 (286, old mark 290) and 36-hole (578–292-286, old mark 590) records.

The freshman currently owns a 73.0 stroke average over nine rounds. He has three rounds under par and has eight in the 60s or 70s. Lundsgaard has won two events and has five top-20 finishes this fall.

The award is the second of the year for WPU.
